I managed to solve the higher latency to UK and the rest of Europe by
changing a line in the script that sets up network interfaces. I changed
    route -A inet6 add 2000::/3 gw ::192.88.99.1 dev sit0
to
    route -A inet6 add 2000::/3 gw ::85.116.1.22 dev sit0

Where 85.116.1.22 is the IPv4 address of 6to4-relay.sov.kewlio.net.uk


If anyone is interested a traceroute to 192.88.99.1 gives
